January 15, 2026 – Cordova, Alaska — Cordova Telecom Cooperative (CTC), a leading telecommunications provider serving Cordova and surrounding communities, in partnership with Pioneer Consulting, the full-service submarine fiber optic telecommunications consulting and project management company, today announced the award of engineering design and submarine cable system equipment for the Fiber Internet Serving Homes in Southeast Alaska (FISH in SEAK) project to Xtera Inc., an innovative provider of subsea fiber optic solutions.
The FISH in SEAK submarine cable system (“FISH South”) will deliver high-capacity fiber connectivity linking Cordova, Yakutat, Pelican, Hoonah, and Gustavus to Juneau, significantly enhancing broadband capacity, network resiliency, and long-term reliability across Southeast Alaska. The system is anticipated to be completed in late 2027.
“Forging this collaboration with Xtera marks a pivotal milestone for the FISH in SEAK project,” said Jeremiah Beckett, Chief Executive Officer of Cordova Telecom Cooperative. “This system will deliver vital connectivity to unserved and underserved communities in Southeast Alaska and improve reliability across the state. Xtera’s deep expertise in advanced subsea cable solutions will be instrumental as we work to connect more Alaskans to essential services, economic opportunities, and the global digital economy.”
“Pioneer was very pleased to advise on Xtera’s selection for the FISH in SEAK project,” said Philip deGuzman, Senior Director at Pioneer Consulting. “Xtera has proven to be a flexible, nimble partner that can adapt to our needs and work collaboratively with both CTC and Pioneer to launch this critical project.”
“We are honored to partner with Cordova Telecom Cooperative and Pioneer on a project of this importance to rural Alaska and the Arctic region,” said Robert Richardson, Chief Sales Officer of Xtera. “Our undersea fiber optic systems are purpose-built to perform in extreme environments, and we are proud to support CTC’s mission to expand resilient, high-performance connectivity across Southeast Alaska.”
Keith Henderson, Chief Executive Officer of Xtera, added, “This collaboration represents a meaningful investment in Alaska’s communications infrastructure and reinforces Xtera’s commitment to extending digital access to some of the world’s most remote and challenging regions. We look forward to working closely with CTC and Pioneer to deliver a reliable, future-ready network that will serve Alaskans for decades to come.”
Once operational, the FISH in SEAK system will provide transformative access to critical services, including telehealth, distance education, public safety, and sustainable economic development. The project will also strengthen the resilience of Alaska’s broadband infrastructure by introducing new, diverse subsea routes that improve redundancy and long-term service continuity.
