MECHANICAL ENGINEER
Industry: Global Communication Infrastructure
Sector: Subsea Cable Systems
Department: Engineering
Location: Romford, London, UK
Xtera is an innovative provider of subsea and telecoms technology. Our telecommunication systems transmit data across underwater cable systems for commercial and governmental customers. We are a Small Medium Enterprise (SME) with offices in Romford, Essex and McKinney, Texas, USA
Our technical challenges include the design of onshore WDM transmission systems and underwater optical amplifier housings and branching elements. All these require detailed mechanical engineering, not least because the underwater plant, comprising electronics, power and optics must operate at water depths of up to 8km for 25 years.
EXPERIENCE
As a mechanical engineer within the UK design and development team you will work with your colleagues on the underwater plant (repeaters, branching units and cable terminations) and occasionally the terrestrial equipment. Tasks will include providing mechanical design support to existing products and developing solutions for new equipment. You will take your designs from concept through to qualification and manufacture. We rely on outside contractors to supplement our internal personnel in busy periods and you may be required to supervise and collate their work.
You will be a graduate, with at least three years industrial experience, who is conscientious and enthusiastic, has a keen attention to detail and the ability to communicate clearly with colleagues.
The role requires a good grounding and proven experience in the following:
- 3D CAD tools (ideally Creo).
- Manufacturing methods.
- Advanced materials.
- Thermal transfer, ideally with some practical modelling experience.
- Structural engineering, again, ideally with some practical modelling expertise.
Day to day, the role will involve:
- Working closely with Electrical and Optical engineering to produce concepts for new products such as submarine telecoms repeaters and branching units.
- Developing chosen concepts into qualified products.
- Product data management. Creation of part and assembly documentation including drawings and Bills of Material.
- Communication of concepts through day-to-day interaction with colleagues and through more formal design reviews to a wider audience.
- Liaising and building relationships with external suppliers and contractors.
- Report writing and documentation.
- Occasionally working offsite or abroad in support of development, manufacturing or installation activities.
- Performing and/or management of qualification testing programs.
REQUIREMENTS
You will be proficient in English, be eligible to live and work in the UK and hold both a passport and driving license
